Google announces free in-home wireless broadband service

"Dark porcelain" project offers self-installed plumbing-based Internet access

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 1, 2007 - Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the launch of Google TiSP (BETA)™, a free in-home wireless broadband service that delivers online connectivity via users' plumbing systems. The Toilet Internet Service Provider (TiSP) project is a self-installed, ad-supported online service that will be offered entirely free to any consumer with a WiFi-capable PC and a toilet connected to a local municipal sewage system.

"We've got that whole organizing-the-world's-information thing more or less under control," said Google Co-founder and President Larry Page, a longtime supporter of so-called "dark porcelain" research and development. "What's interesting, though, is how many different modalities there are for actually getting that information to you - not to mention from you."

For years, data carriers have confronted the "last hundred yards" problem for delivering data from local networks into individual homes. Now Google has successfully devised a "last hundred smelly yards" solution that takes advantage of preexisting plumbing and sewage systems and their related hydraulic data-transmission capabilities. "There's actually a thriving little underground community that's been studying this exact solution for a long time," says Page. "And today our Toilet ISP team is pleased to be leading the way through the sewers, up out of your toilet and - splat - right onto your PC."

Users who sign up online for the TiSP system will receive a full home self-installation kit, which includes a spindle of fiber-optic cable, a TiSP wireless router, installation CD and setup guide. Home installation is a simple matter of GFlushing™ the fiber-optic cable down to the nearest TiSP Access Node, then plugging the other end into the network port of your Google-provided TiSP wireless router. Within sixty minutes, the Access Node's crack team of Plumbing Hardware Dispatchers (PHDs) should have your internet connection up and running.

"I couldn't be more excited about, and am only slightly grossed out by, this remarkable new product," said Marissa Mayer, Google's Vice President of Search Products and User Experience. "I firmly believe TiSP will be a breakthrough product, particularly for those users who, like Larry himself, do much of their best thinking in the bathroom."

Interested consumers, contractually obligated partners and deeply skeptical and quietly competitive backbiters can learn more about TiSP at http://www.google.com/tisp/install.html.

Alton Brown

Thanks to my move down here to Cincinnati, I had the opportunity to meet Alton Brown. He was in town at the Cincinnati Home & Garden show. He gave an interesting and funny presentation about food, TV and technology. Afterwards he did a Q & A. I got everyone but two questions on video with my Kodak V550. It turned out pretty good. He did two presentations, one at 1pm and one at 3pm. I ended up staying for both since I did not know the first time that we needed a ticket to get something signed.

This was from the second show.

He is a very good story teller. You could tell, after being at both presentations that he was just pulling different stories up depending on what people would say during Q & A etc.

I'm usually not star struck when I see someone famous, however I did a little with Alton. I've been watching him since the first season of Good Eats, I have all his books, I watch all the episodes of Feasting on Asphalt, I watch Iron Chef America, so I see him a lot and I've learned a lot about cooking from him. So when I got up on stage to have him sign my book and have a picture taken, I felt like a moron. After first only saying my name, barely, and then asking him how he was (dumb), I sat there as he signed the book. I then blurted out, "Your books are great, by the way." Gee, could I have sounded any more like a retard? He instantly stopped signing the book, looked at me and genuinely said, "Thank you very much!" At least he was nice about it. I'm sure there are plenty of people that do that. There was a huge crowd there for both shows.

Look at the goof with Alton Brown!

Surprisingly the picture above turned out pretty good. I usually hate all pictures of me but this one isn't too bad.

Anyway, it's nice, when you finally meet someone famous, that they are just like you were hoping they were. Alton is exactly the same in real life as he is on all his shows.

There were some news that he gave out at todays presentation as well. First, the next season of Good Eats goes into production this Tuesday. Yea! The second was that in the spring, he will be going back out on motorcycles to do another season of Feasting on Asphalt. Woo hoo! The third was that, starting in July, Good Eats will be on the Food Network twice as much as it is now. And finally, maybe the biggest news, Alton challenged Emeril to an Iron chef match!!! Now, I would love to see that!!!! Yes I did get that on video and I will try to post it soon. Its a good shot too, since he was talking to the guy right behind me so he is looking right into my camera.

Well that was my full day. You can view more pics from the day on my MySpace page.

Ralph "Bucky" Phillips Caught

They finally caught Bucky!

I live in Jamestown, New York. Most of the man hunt for Ralph "Bucky" Phillips has taken place in the county that I live in, Chautauqua. It's been a long several months as New York State Police, Pensilvania State Police, Sherriffs departments from 3 countys in each state, and federal departments like the FBI and Federal Marshalls were on the largest manhunt in New York history.

He stole two cars early this morning around 2am which is where his mistake started. He was followed to a town about 10 miles southeast of Jamestown called Akeley. A K-9 until was on his trail when he turned towards them and waved a gun so the officer shot at him but he got away unharmed. SWAT set up a parimitar in a triangle formation and just squeezed down on him until the pimple popped with hellicoptors overhead and several cops with high powered weapons bearing down on him he gave up.

"At 8 o'clock tonight, (Bucky) Phillips, as I told you before, could run but he could not hide," New York State Police Superintendent Wayne Bennett said at a news conference where he was flanked by officers from numerous law enforcement agencies.

Much of todays searching was done on and near the Cable Hollow Golf Course in Russell, PA. I used to work with the son of the owner at Red Lobster and made a website for the golf course which they ended up not using. Brings things really close to home.

Phillips was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list Thursday. Over the last week or so it was all over the national new, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, AP, etc.

He will now face charges of unlawful flight in Buffalo, NY, also attempted murder down state for shotting a state police officer. I'm sure he will also face more charges of attempted murder of a state police officer here in Chautauqua as well as agrivated murder for the shotting of Trooper Joseph Longobardo, 32. According to Chautauqua County Sherriff Joseph Gerace, if convicted of the last charge of agrivated murder Phillips will face life in jail without parol. I hope that is what happens.

The map shown is of where Phillips was found and arrested.

TED - Al Gore, February 2006

Al Gore, in his own words, "used to be the next President of the United States of America" but has since changed professions. This talk is a follow-up to his now-famous presentation, featured in the movie, "An Inconvenient Truth." In it, he outlines what we can do to avert a global climate crisis. I'm Lost

Did you see Lost last night? Holy Shit!!! Now I expect surprises but I never expected the ending that happened last night. If you didn't see it I don't want to spoil it for you but there isn't one, not two, but three surprises at the end of the show that will change the entire show. I can't wait to see the show next week.

Alias is back! The last few seasons you could see the influence ABC has had on the show to make it work for the masses but now that the show is ending they have taken their claws out and we have season one type Alias. It is great!!! Again some big surprises but you learn to expect the most unexpected with Alias, I can't wait to see how they end the show! Hopefully they will leave it open for an Alias movie in the future, directed by J.J. of course.

Finally, The Office. Very funny episode tonight! I love the line that someone replaced Dwight's pens with crayons. That is too funny, I think I'll try some of those, they are good office jokes. Now, Jim went in for the interview to transfer to the other office but according to Jenna Fischer's MySpace page, who plays Pam, all the actors are coming back for next season so who knows how they are going to play this out but it should be fun.

Ok, I'm out

P.S. I got a new position at PNG, I'm now the trainer for the Jamestown office so I get to mold their young minds as they come to work for the company :P

This is a funny website. Doesn't really sell anything, at least not yet. I think this is a website that will evolve into something interesting. Check it out.

Car Show

Well, the 2006 Buffalo auto show is coming up this week. To be honest I'm not even sure what to expect. I mean, I know I will see some newbies like the new Jeep's, and the Dodge Caliper. Beyond that I have no idea what will be there. Hopefully it will be a good show and just as last year I will be posting loads of pics. Of course this year I will be using my new Kodak V550 camera so you know they will be good quality.

Rolling Stones

So the Rolling Stones were the half time act for Super Bowl XL.

I'm sorry, but what a joke. They souldn't they it was Karaoke night at the local bar with a better stage. They sounded horrible. The band looked like the backup band for a retirement party. The singer was out of breath half way through the first song. Then he started to wave his hands in the air and show of his way too short t-shirt that he got from the womens section of the Gap. Just sad. The pre-game show should have been the half time show.

Resource

So I was playing around with my new found DSL service the other day, watching streaming videos, going to websites that I just didn't have the patience for when I was using dial up, and doing Google searches. I decided to Google "ViperWD", put the results to 100 per page and hit search. The first few links didn't really surprise me, links to my various pages and to my old domain, www.viperwd.com. One did stick out though. It had a clip from one of my posts from a year ago about Deet. My interest was peeked, so I clicked on the link. It is a page about mosquito control and what to use. I scrolled down a little and there is a list of links to resources for more information and what do I see? A link to my post about Deet listed as a resource for more information. Now I do try to make my posts informative if possible and give as much information as I can but I never thought anything that I put here would be used for a resource. This was very cool.

The website is Cdc Deet. The address is: www.mosquito-control-now.info/mosquito-pest-control/cdc-deet.html
If you go there, scroll down the page a little and under "Additional Cdc Deet Resources" you will see the link to my posting. Hopefully my next posting of this nature will also be considered a useful resource.
